Winter is upon us, and, for many of my subscribers around the country, that means snow. This is the time of year that your kids will enjoy playing in the snow, building snowmen, sledding down hills, and having snowball fights. For me, here in Houston, it means varying weather conditions from cold days to warmer days wishing we could swim in our new pool.

Children can get bored with the same old flashcard routine. Here's a more entertaining way to learn letters and words.

Learning Fun Freebie

I have created a fun winter activity for your little learners to use while stuck indoors during major snowstorms. This printable allows your preschoolers and kindergarten students to match the snowball images and match them with the matching letter on the letter mat. The mats include both uppercase letters and lowercase letters. There are multiple images for each letter of the alphabet. Some images may also represent different letters. For example, the image of the pig may go with P for Pig or H for Hog.

For added fun, you can use magnet letters on the refrigerator to match each snowball image.

This activity can also be used in the classroom for letter recognition and sight words at literacy centers. You can have your students not just match the image with the appropriate letters of the alphabet, but you can have them work on phonics identifying the letter name and letter sound, as well as write the name of the image. For those little learners with little hands and little fingers, they will be working on their fine motor skills by writing out each word on a separate recording sheet.

For older learners, you can create your own images with their sight words to match the word cards. This winter activity can also be used to expand a learner’s vocabulary.

In order for this alphabet activity to be reusable, I recommend that you use a laminator on the sheets for added durability before cutting out the images. Make sure to include this literacy activity in your bin of resources for future use.
