Do you have an aspiring author at home? How about someone interested in journalism? Or even a poet or a child who just likes to journal? Clear Water Press provides a video-based language arts program taught by award-winning author Daniel Schwabaer. Students are saying that “Daniel Schwabauer is one of the most insightful, inspiring teachers [they] have ever encountered.”
Clear Water Press is not in the business of ordinary Language Arts education. They never have been. Every course Daniel Schwabauer has created is based on his belief that every student has something they want to communicate; he believes that they deserve a course that will show them how.
Daniel Schwabauer has developed three fascinating courses for aspiring writers:
- Create a magazine with Cover Story! (Grades 6–9)
- Write your own novel with The One Year Adventure Novel! (Grades 9–12 / age 13 and up)
- Travel through time as a journalist with Byline! (Grades 9–12)
Learning to write should be immersive. After all, stories are. It shouldn’t be a secret: every form of writing is a kind of story.
Who knew writing could be so much fun?
Cover Story (Grades 6-9)
Cover Story takes middle school students on a guided tour through the process of creating the content for their own magazine in a single school year. Students are led, step by step, on a fun, thought-provoking journey of exploration and creation. They write poems, short stories, non-fiction articles, letters, and many other short pieces. They also learn to journal every day by following the creative structure of The Remarkable Journal of Professor Gunther Von Steuben. Along the way, they study not just a story’s form, but its execution.
At the end of each academic year, Clear Water Press celebrates the work and artistry of their students Magazine Showcase through their Finish Line contest. The first-place winner will receive a $25 Amazon gift card!
They also award a few prizes to select pieces—individual articles, stories, poems, and the like—that they feel are particularly skillful.

One Year Adventure Novel (Grades 9-12)
In the One Year Adventure Novel program, Daniel Schwabauer leads high school students through the process of writing their own novel. Both eager writers and reluctant writers can have their skills transformed!
Through 78 video lessons, The One Year Adventure Novel high school English curriculum guides 9th–12th graders step-by-step in creating an original, fully-structured, compelling adventure novel—in one school year.
Clear Water Press also offers summer and winter workshops for their students which take writers to the next level in their writing, as well as three exciting contests:
- Student Novel Contest – Any One Year Adventure Novel student under 20 who has a valid curriculum license and who finishes a novel that meets the course requirements can submit their work. The top three winners receive cash prizes and more, including a custom pen with rosewood and leather.
- Short Story Contest – This contest is for busy writers college-age and beyond! Clear Water Press designed this short story contest to give writers a chance to submit and receive recognition for their writing even after you have aged out of the Student Novel Contest.
- Video Contest – This video contest is a great opportunity to practice storytelling through a different format – and share your story with other young readers. Students are tasked to tell other students about their One Year Adventure Novel (OYAN) experience. The top three entrants receive cash prizes and more.

Byline (Grades 9-12)
Byline takes 9th–12th graders on a wild quest for stories left untold in the forgotten corners of history. As they step into the role of a 1930s-era newspaper reporter, students train under Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Schwabauer, who takes students under his wings to teach them everything he knows. Along the way, and before they even realize what they are doing, students learn to write great essays!
Byline combines writing instruction with intriguing historic people and events to not only equip students with essay-writing skills but to help them enjoy the journey!
Students enrolled in the Byline program receive their own copy of The Reporter’s Notebook, which is laid out to correspond to the lessons on video and in the Training Manual. It helps student journalists separate fact from opinion and encourages observation on two levels. Good writers notice interesting details in stories and in life. But they don’t just notice the details. They also notice their own reactions to those details. The Reporter’s Notebook is designed to help student reporters interpret their findings and observations by organizing them into Questions and Answers. It is also formatted to develop good citation skills—necessary for academic essays at the college level.
All three programs are offered on DVD or through video streaming on the cloud. The instruction is self-directed and parent-friendly. Clear Water Press offers imaginative learning for both middle school and high school students alike. Each program, if taken in high school, is worth 1 high school credit. If that is not an incentive to try this game-changing program, I don’t know what is!
