Being a reading teacher, teaching the different genres is required according to the state standards. However, it’s one of my favorite subject to teach to my students.
I like to pick one reading genre per week and concentrate on reading and sharing the specific genre with the class. I have students pick a book or article that interests them within that genre either in the classroom library, school library or online for independent reading.
This is a way to encourage the love to reading into my students little minds. By introducing them to the different genres, they will be able to determine their own reading interests.
Also, I love to read a loud to my students. I have a rule that I will not read the same reading genre in a row to the class. I always let the class vote on the book that we will read a loud in class. I have a variety of at least 4 books that they can vote on as a class. After we finish the book, we discuss the book in great depth and rate the book so the other classes in the school can be aware of our great literature finds.
