Today, my boys and I made something they thought was FANTASTIC.  We made Candy Cane Playdough they can eat!

Edible Candy Cane Playdough, Peppermint Play do recipe and free printable!

So here’s what we did. First, we put four cups of marshmallows and 1 tablespoon of water, and 1.5 Teaspoons of Red Food Coloring (liquid) and 1.5 Teaspoons of Peppermint Extract in a bowl.  (You need a total of two tablespoons of liquid.) And we heated it in the microwave for 35 seconds. Then, we stirred it a bit and heated it for 30 seconds again in the microwave. We continued this until the marshmallows were melted. Once the marshmallows were liquid, we added some more gel food coloring (red) and 1 box of powdered sugar (4 cups) and stirred and mashed it with the back of a spoon and kneaded it with our hands until it was all blended in.

And we ended up with edible candy cane playdough. We made some red, and some white (no food dye) and we played with it. (Just don’t try to add food coloring to the white playdough when it is all done. Trust me on this. Peter decided he wanted it to be blue after I took pictures. He’s going to have blue hands for days!) And they ate it. And at the end of the day we threw away what was left because they had been sticking it in their mouths and stepping on it and who knows what else. That was almost the best part in my opinion. No baggies of play dough in my pantry!
