The Strawberry Secret!

Does it make you want to pull your hair out when you open your strawberry carton and a few of those precious babies have more hair than your husband?

It really irks me!

Our whole family adores popping a strawberry in their mouth for a sweet snack!

But often we forget about the carton of fresh expensive strawberries because somehow they migrate to the back of the fridge.

I found the solution.

And it’s tried and true!

I bought these beautiful strawberries 12 days ago!  Don’t they look perfect?

Here is the strawberry secret!

Wash them with vinegar!

  • When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar and ten parts water.
  • Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around.
  • Drain, rinse if you want, but not necessary.
  • Store in the fridge.

The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit.

Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft.

And your so BERRY welcome for this frugal tip!  LOL!

10 Laundry Secrets!

Laundry is a never ending chore! It should be considered a credited homeschool subject worth several credits in our household.

I’m really serious!  We do about 4 loads a day and we still aren’t caught up!

Hope some of these laundry tips make your chore a successful experience especially with your little ones.

5 Steps to Cleaner Clothes for Frigidaire by Tara Aronson

  1. Immediately rinse or blot away spills on your clothes with cool water to prevent stains from setting.
  2. Read fabric care labels before you wash. Your clothes will last longer if you know how to treat them.
  3. Sort laundry by color, wash cycle needed, and water temperature required. The Frigidaire Affinity’s Permanent Press cycle washes with warm water and less agitation, resulting in less wear and tear on your sturdy jeans, khakis, and sweaters; the Dedicates cycle uses cold water and light agitation to gently clean swimsuits, workout clothes, and lingerie.
  4. Before washing stained garments, pretreat or prewash the spot using the Affinity’s Rinse & Spin cycle. If at first you don’t succeed, wash, wash again.
  5. To keep snags and lint to a minimum, zip zippers, button buttons, empty pockets, and brush away lint before tossing duds in the hamper.

5 Most Common Summer Spills for Frigidaire by Tara Aronson

1. Crayon-Scrape off as much of the colorful surface as possible using a plastic picnic knife. Apply laundry detergent directly on the stained area. Gently rub the detergent into the fabric then let sit several minutes. Launder using the hottest water the fabric can handle – or the Sanitize setting of your Frigidaire Affinity washer. Dry as usual.

2. Iced coffee -Sponge the stained area with cold water. Apply a pretreater to the blight. Wash as usual and air dry.

3. Grass-Prewash the garment in warm water in your washing machine –the Rinse & Spin cycle on your Affinity washer – and a laundry detergent containing enzymes. Launder as usual (normal setting) with detergent and chlorine bleach if safe for the fabric. If the garment’s care label instructions advise against it, use oxygen (color safe) bleach instead. Dry as usual.

4. Juice-Soak for a minute or so in cold water. Remove excess water, and then apply a pretreater directly on the stained area. Wash with detergent as usual. Air dry. Do not place in the dryer until the blight is completely gone – otherwise the stain is likely to set.

5. Chocolate (or chocolate ice cream) – Prewash the garment in warm water with a laundry detergent that contains enzymes using the Affinity’s Rinse & spin setting. Launder as usual, using the washing machine’s Normal setting. Dry as usual.

10 Ways to Save at Restaurants!

Being a large homeschool family, going out to eat costs our family an arm and a leg!  Literally!

It’s a rare occasion, but we try to be frugal while still enjoying our time out together.

Here are 10 Ways We Save at Restaurants!

  1. Drink Water – soft drinks are terribly expensive.  Ask for lemon or lime to spruce up your ice water.
  2. Skip Appetizers and Desserts – if you must eat a dessert then eat ice cream when you get home.  Chances are you won’t want the extra calories after all.
  3. Be Aware of the Restaurant Specials – always ask what the special is for that day.  It usually is always less expensive.
  4. Kids Eat Free – find out what days kids eat free at all your favorite restaurants.
  5. Bring a Coupon – check restaurant.com or go directly to the restaurants website or facebook page before deciding on where to dine.
  6. Combine Coupons and Daily Specials – for example if you have a kids eat free coupon then order the special for even more savings.
  7. Share a Meal – always ask your server ahead of time, some restaurants have stipulations.  Split a dessert if you are both still hungry.
  8. Avoid Tipping at times- go to a restaurant that serves quality food, such as, Chipotle’s, Panera Bread, or Quiznos where you order your food at the counter.  (Before you send me any hate mail, I strongly believe in tipping your server, but there are times as these that I don’t think it is necessary)
  9. Go out to lunch – lunch items are always less expensive than dinner entrees.
  10. Restaurant Budget – use the envelope system while spending only the cash that is available.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  Also, it will help you be more conscious of what you are ordering.

I hope some of these tips will help your family save while still experiencing an enjoyable dining experience.

What’s For Dinner, Mom?

“What’s For Dinner, Mom?”

That is the question that I get asked everyday by one of my 5 sons and I’m sure my 2 year old will soon be asking, too.  My husband knows better!

I have to admit that I am a planner and usually have an answer, but spending time in the kitchen and meal planning is not exactly my idea of delight.  In the perfect world I would bulk cook and have a pot luck freezer, and would be able to ask the sweet children what they would like that evening for supper.

I guess I don’t live in that perfect world!

I much rather be outside with my children, reading a book, or even doing laundry then being inside my kitchen.

And then comes making the weekly list and fighting the battle at Walmart every Saturday.

Going out to eat is a rare occasion when you have a family of 8, so that is not an option.

I know I need to implement bulk cooking, but it’s always been overwhelming to me.  I am aware that it would spare me overall time and money, but I have not been able to get motivated.

I had the opportunity to indulge in Lorrie Flem’s book, “What’s for Dinner, Mom?”  I was a bit skeptical as first, because I have read numerous monthly bulk cooking books and I couldn’t think of anything worse…spending all day in the kitchen on a Saturday.  And that would be after I survived the Walmart mob.

UGH!

However, What’s For Dinner, Mom?, introduced me to a whole new cooking approach!

It’s called streamline cooking!

Yes, it still is bulk cooking to a certain extent, but making several of one dish at a time and freezing it is much more appealing to me then spending several Saturday’s a month cooking all day just to have my pot luck freezer dream.  Lorrie explains numerous different ways to utilize our time wisely while still providing wholesome meals to our family.

It would be a blessing to provide for a family in need at notice and be able to pop something in the oven that is already prepared when days get hectic.

Time is an essence to me!  Being a homeschool mother of 6 children, I need to spend my time diligently.  And that doesn’t include spending half my day in the kitchen in my opinion.

In the book, Lorrie gives us several creative options of how to cook in bulk.  The book is filled with homemaker tips and recipes from the 1800’s.  In fact, the second half of the book is loaded with recipes that work with the streamline technique. All of the recipes have been tested by families to make sure they were tasty, healthy and economical.

If you want tips and tricks for a month’s worth of meals in just a few afternoons, as well as, healthy and economically meals than this book will be a blessing to you.  It has been for me.

You can purchase this 196 paged spiral-bound book, What’s For Dinner, Mom? for 12.97 at Eternal Magazine.

See what’s cookin’ in my kitchen!

I received a PDF copy of What’s For Dinner, Mom? in exchange for my honest review.  No other compensation was given.
