25 HOT Home School Items!

Affiliate links have been used in this post.  Read my full disclosure policy. Now that you have decided to homeschool your children, what on earth do you need?

Of course, you will not be able to purchase all these homeschool HOT  items, but you can add them over time.  Unless your homeschool budget is much grander than mine, pick and choose which ones you can’t live without.

These have been compiled from numerous seasoned homeschoolers and we pretty much all said the same items.

25 HOT Homeschool Items

    1. Bible – we also really enjoy the dramatized  bible on audio, this is not the one we have, but this one is FREE.
    2. Dry Erase Boards – we have a HUGE one in the school room, but have several little ones that we use daily.  And yes, we home school on the bed!
    3. A good Pencil Sharpener – we prefer the electric ones
    4. Globe – we use atlases, too.
    5. Library Card – we only have one family card.  All the children had their own at one time and it was a disaster.  We keep all library books in a basket or designated self.
    6. Red Pens – I stock up during the Back to School sale at Walmart
    7. Flag – teach your child the Pledge of Allegiance, please!
    8. Good Planner - tons of free homeschool planners.
    9. A Schedule posted – not necessary with times, but in sequence order to everyone knows what to do next.
    10. 3 Hole Punch - some day when my ship comes in, I want an electric one.
    11. Laminator – this is my favorite item.  I use it all the time.
    12. Page Protectors – invest in good quality ones.  We make a lot of notebook pages.
    13. Bible Tools – The children use a concordance, bible dictionary, and other various tools to do research
    14. Mom Support Groupon-line and in real life.  This is so imperative because Satan will attack you and the yellow school bus will be so tempting!
    15. Stapler – and lots of staples.
    16. Scissors – a good pair for Mommy.
    17. Printer that has a copier – I use this feature all the time!
    18. Sticky Notes – I use the little ones as bookmarks in all teacher guides, so I know where we left off instantly.
    19. Binders – we like the white ones with a slip sleeve, so they can create their own cover.
    20. Book Shelves – over the years you will build a library.  Also, each one of my children have their own shelf to store all their homeschool books.
    21. Label Maker - I am addicted!
    22. Pencils – more than you could ever imagine
    23. Local Homeschool Group –  get your children involved and participate in field trips, projects, and activities.
    24. 1828 Dictionary – we use this for word studies.  One of my favorite resources
    25. Crayons/Map Colors- I buy an enormous amount during the Back to School sales
Of course, I am sure you could think of many other things that would be helpful, but these are the ones that were the most popular among the homeschool community.

Character Education goes hand and hand with God’s Word.

The character we exhibit has a dramatic impact not only on how we treat our family and community members, but also has a direct role in our success in spreading the Gospel, as well as, becoming tomorrows leaders.

The We Choose Virtue homeschool faith based kit includes everything you need to train your children ages 3-12  in righteous biblical character that will instill timeless values.

What’s included in the Homeschool Kit?

    •  The Kids Virtue Poster
    •  The Three Rules Poster
    •  13 Parenting Cards
    •  3 Kids of Virtueville Mini Posters
    •  12 Flash Cards
    •  1 pad/25ct Virtue User Review
    • 100 Days of Virtue Chart and stickers

How it works for our family

Our family concentrates on one new virtue a week while reviewing the previous virtues.  With little or no prep time, and the suggested 10 minutes of teaching virtues each day, I am amazed how quickly my whole family learns and applies each new virtue!  Even though the curriculum is geared towards younger children, my high schoolers participate and help remind the little ones of the virtues when needed.  This will continue to be a constant work in progress!
Each Monday, I introduce the specific virtue card to the children.  The little ones color the virtue page from the FREE PDF coloring book that comes with the kit during our discussion time.  We talk about ways we can demonstrate the virtue and specific examples of neglecting to demonstrate the character trait.  It took several weeks for the children to recognize their struggles, but they are pin pointing their issues more freely each week.  We review the memory verse and parenting cards each day throughout the week.
We have the Three Rule Poster and Kid’s Virtue Poster on our refrigerator.  I continue to add the mini posters in our school room as we discuss new weekly virtues.  I recommend laminating them for longer use.

We will utilize the 100 Days Virtue Chart, stickers, and pad after we have completed all 12 virtues.  I love the concept that the whole family must demonstrate the virtue of the day in order to get a sticker.  This will encourage accountability.

I plan on purchasing a fun hat for the little ones to wear when they exhibit excellence virtue for the day.  This was a clever and fun idea that was suggested in the parent guide.

Results of We Choose Virtues in our Family

Last summer, my younger sons 7 and 5 were spending the week at my parents house.  They went to the pool and had to wait 3 hours until the thunder depleted.  Each time it thundered, they would say, “I’ll wait, and I’ll wait, and I”ll wait with a smile on my face.

They have more patience than their mama!

Also, my 3 year old repeats the virtue statements throughout the day.  She might not understand what they truly mean, but she will eventually.

Fun Way to Learn NEW Vocabulary Words during Family Night!

Super FUN vocabulary words game

A fun and effective way to learn and remember Vocabulary Words!

Our Family Night just got crazier and more intellectual after playing Marie’s Words!  It’s not only competitive but challenging too.

Marie’s Words utilizes colorful illustrations to create a “visual” for each of the 550 vocabulary words taken from the literature portion of the SAT test. While some of the illustrations are a bit challenging at first, once understood, each drawing aids in mastering the definitions of the vocabulary words. On the reverse of each Marie’s Words card is the phonetic pronunciation, definition, part of speech, the word used in a sentence, synonyms, and antonyms.

Each of the 550 cards are alphabetized, numbered, and with a hole punched in a corner. Marie’s Words presents difficult vocabulary in a visual and meaningful way for children of all ages.

vocabulary words Game

Marie’s Words provides 2 games for endless word fun, Picture Words and Marie’s Wordsmith.

How it Works for Us

FUN game vocabulary words

We pop a bowl of popcorn and huddle up at the kitchen table.  All games are more FUN with popcorn, right?

We prefer to play Picture Words during our Family Nights, but we add a little twist to the bonus points.  Each person who can accurately define one of the review words before the game starts, gets a bonus point.  We put all review cards on a metal ring. To make it fair for everyone, we right down our answers on paper and review them together instead of shouting them all out.

We each take a turn drawing a random card and everyone gets a shot at guessing the word by simply looking at the picture.  If you are correct, you get a point. Next, the person drawing reads the definition and everyone must use the word in a wacky sentence.

Whomever accumulates the most points after drawing 10-20 new vocabulary word cards is the winner!

Our little ones try to guess the definition, too.  However, they are usually playing or coloring quietly next to us.

I was extremely impressed when I realized Marie’s Words was created by a high school junior preparing for the SAT.  I guess that explains why my 2 high schoolers enjoy playing it so much.  My 7 year old loves to draw a card and guess the definition, too.

It’s a super FUN game that we all enjoy playing during our weekly Family Nights!

A Must Have for Copywork!

This is one of my favorite homeschool products that we are utilizing this year!

I am a strong believer in copywork and I was thrilled to add Presidential Penmanship to our homeschool days.

All compiled on one CD-Rom or ebook form, Presidential Penmanship, by Zeezok Publishing includes copywork for grades 1 through senior high. Each level contains more difficult and longer passages suited for the grade level.

Each lesson is composed of a presidential quote, scripture passage or excerpt from one of our founding documents written in the specified handwriting style chosen.  A lined space underneath the copywork makes it easy for the student to copy in their neatest handwriting.

Presidential Penmanship Handwriting Style Options

 How it Benefits Students

This is considered a supplemental handwriting course meaning it doesn’t teach the handwriting basics. The student would need to be familiar with their letter formations before engaging in Presidential Penmanship.  My second grader jumped right into the program without any problems.

Presidential Penmanship helps students practice their handwriting skills while recognizing the principles of our nation’s founding and history while reinforcing character qualities of good citizenship.

Sadly, this is lacking in today’s society.

Want to see for yourself a sample of Presidential Penmanship?

How it Works for Us

Each week, I printed the upcoming week’s lesson for each student.  After the student finished their lesson for the day, I had them show me their work and we discussed the meaning behind what the quote, passage, or document meant to us as American citizens.  It sparked great conversation each morning.

For my 6th grader, I encouraged him to look up any unfamiliar word in the 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary.  It  also gave us an opportunity to discuss the grammar mechanics in the quote.  He never gets bored because he is introduced to a new quote each day.

We are really enjoying the Presidential Penmanship each day.  It makes copywork fun and interesting for my boys.  And not to the mention the inquisitive wisdom they are being exposed to while mastering their handwriting.

Presidential Penmanship– (Complete Program) is 39.99 and can be purchased at Zeezok Publishing website.

Instilling Habits that Builds Biblical Character!

“Write them upon the table of thine heart.”  Proverbs 7:3

Character is not something that is just taught, but requires a change in the heart.

Keepers of the Faith offers an in depth character curriculum, Write Upon My Heart.  The curriculum set includes books implementing one of the each 18 character traits.

Each individual character book includes:

  • Bible examples of the trait
  • How Jesus lived the trait in His earthly life
  • Practical lessons on the trait
  • Instructions in developing the trait
  • Stories centering on the trait
  • Poems involving the trait
  • Practical applications and more!
  • A thirty-day journal to schedule and record one’s progress
You can view sample pages.

The recommended ages for Write Upon My Heart Character Curriculum is 8 through 14, however, it can easily be adapted for younger children with parental guidance.

According to the Keeper of the Faith website:

The idea is not to “cover material,” but to change a life carefully and methodically, one obstacle at a time.

You may read the books front page to last page or start anywhere in between.  It is suggested that you complete all pages before going on to the next character book. Working on a page or two a day will have you completing a book per month.

How It Works for Us

Each afternoon after lunch time, the children and I sit on my bed ready to read and discuss one of the character books. I like how there is virtually no prep time for the teacher. This month we are working through the book, Modesty.

Each child is required to bring their bible and bible notebook during our discussion time.  Before we began the character, Modesty, we talked about what defines character.  Good habits become good character, and bad habits become bad character.

First, we read a small section from the book and discuss the questions together orally each day.  We look up the recommended scriptures that pertains to the character and how each verse applies to our lives.

The boys didn’t realize that modesty does not only refer to our dress, but also means to have a humble temper, free from vanity or conceit.  Ouch!

Instead of maintaining the recommended journal entries for 30 days on modesty, we discussed the journal questions orally and held each another accountable.  It takes 30 days to form a habit.

My Thoughts

I believe Write Upon My Heart Character Curriculum is an excellent investment and tool in training your children in biblical character for all families whether you are called to homeschool or send your children to public schools.

These character books are designed for individual use, but can easily be adapted to work orally for family or group use.

The curriculum stresses that we can not blame others for our behavior.  Jesus was the example of perfect character. We must go to God’s Word to find the best essence of good character.  I love the application and real life stories that are in each book.

The character curriculum would be perfect for a homeschool coop or group setting, too.

Teaching the Bible with Simple Stick Figures!

Adding Stick figures to our daily homeschooling has sparked an interest in our home while engaging in the homeschool product review,  Old Testament Overview – Beginner Student and Teacher ebook.

Grapevine Studies offers a simple, but creative array of both New and Old Testament Bible studies for all ages ranging from Pre-K to adult. The easy, ‘Stick Figuring Through The Bible,’ approach  allows for a multi-sensory learning experience that gives students of all ages methods to grasp and retain God’s Word in their hearts.

The Beginner Book Series is designed for children 5 – 7 years of age, however, my 2 year old was quite the artist and listened to the Bible lesson attentively along with her brothers.

How it worked for our Family

The Old Testament Overview teacher guide is simple to understand and leaves the teacher little to no prep time.

We started each lesson with a prayer and read the scripture passages.  I encouraged my sons to try to find it in their own Bibles and I helped them when needed.  I also introduced the memory verse at that time.

I already had on hand the recommended teaching supplies:

  • Bible
  • Dry erase board
  • Dry Erase markers
  • Colored pencils/crayons – occasionally I will let them use water colors
  • Lessons pages for each student/teacher – Easily printable from pdf
  • Bible Dictionary – we used a children’s version
After we read the passage, I drew the stick figures as shown in the teacher guide.  While my children were drawing, I discussed in detail the scripture application.

It is encouraged to ask and discuss with the children the review questions that ask who, what, when, where, and why after the lesson to ensure that they have obtained the objectives of the lesson. At this time, I also had my oldest look up key words in a children’s bible dictionary.

We orally discussed the section review before moving on to the next lesson.  Also, there is a final review designed to ensure your child has mastered the objective and goals for each lesson.

The Results After Using Grapevine Studies

My 2 year old told us that God made everything when looking at the stars a few evenings after we completed the Creation lesson.

My 5 year continues to draw stick figures of numerous different bible stories that he knows and teaches his little sister.

I Don’t Have Enough FAITH to be an Atheist!

Photobucket

I jumped at the chance to participate in the homeshcool product review, I Don’t Have Enought FAITH to Be an Atheist book and study guide(curriculum)

The title made me gasp!

Bible and character training takes priority in our home before academics.

Photobucket

This is an indepth study designed for the high schooler, however, an adult can be challenged with this book, too!

There is deep spiritual insight in this book and makes an excellent family discussion.  My husband and I have made a date with our son every Sunday evening to discuss his lesson from the previous week.  This is imperative in my opinion to get the most out of this book and study guide and to understand where your teen is spiritually.  Be prepared to answer questions.

Since I am frugal, I will not let my son write in the study guide.  He writes the key terms, questions in your mind, and facts in the chapter in his bible notebook.  It would be nice if the study guide was available in PDF form, so my other children can engage in this study when they are age appropriate.

According to Apologia’s website:

I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist, this study will prepared teens and young adults to defend their Christian faith with boldness and effectiveness. During this course, your studentwill tackle the question of absolute truth, demolish the follies of postmodernism, debunk moral relativism, and march logically and surely toward the inescapable truths of the Christian faith.

To take a peek into the table of contents and sample of I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek.

This book and study guide will equip your teen to know why they believe in Christianity.  I want my children to be BOLD in Christ and be able to spread the Gospel with confidence.

The book initially explains to the reader the Three Major Religious Worldviews.  My son and I had an interesting conversation after he read the introduction.
