The Strawberry Secret!

Does it make you want to pull your hair out when you open your strawberry carton and a few of those precious babies have more hair than your husband?

It really irks me!

Our whole family adores popping a strawberry in their mouth for a sweet snack!

But often we forget about the carton of fresh expensive strawberries because somehow they migrate to the back of the fridge.

I found the solution.

And it’s tried and true!

I bought these beautiful strawberries 12 days ago!  Don’t they look perfect?

Here is the strawberry secret!

Wash them with vinegar!

  • When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar and ten parts water.
  • Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around.
  • Drain, rinse if you want, but not necessary.
  • Store in the fridge.

The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit.

Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft.

And your so BERRY welcome for this frugal tip!  LOL!

10 Ways to Save at Restaurants!

Being a large homeschool family, going out to eat costs our family an arm and a leg!  Literally!

It’s a rare occasion, but we try to be frugal while still enjoying our time out together.

Here are 10 Ways We Save at Restaurants!

  1. Drink Water – soft drinks are terribly expensive.  Ask for lemon or lime to spruce up your ice water.
  2. Skip Appetizers and Desserts – if you must eat a dessert then eat ice cream when you get home.  Chances are you won’t want the extra calories after all.
  3. Be Aware of the Restaurant Specials – always ask what the special is for that day.  It usually is always less expensive.
  4. Kids Eat Free – find out what days kids eat free at all your favorite restaurants.
  5. Bring a Coupon – check restaurant.com or go directly to the restaurants website or facebook page before deciding on where to dine.
  6. Combine Coupons and Daily Specials – for example if you have a kids eat free coupon then order the special for even more savings.
  7. Share a Meal – always ask your server ahead of time, some restaurants have stipulations.  Split a dessert if you are both still hungry.
  8. Avoid Tipping at times- go to a restaurant that serves quality food, such as, Chipotle’s, Panera Bread, or Quiznos where you order your food at the counter.  (Before you send me any hate mail, I strongly believe in tipping your server, but there are times as these that I don’t think it is necessary)
  9. Go out to lunch – lunch items are always less expensive than dinner entrees.
  10. Restaurant Budget – use the envelope system while spending only the cash that is available.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  Also, it will help you be more conscious of what you are ordering.

I hope some of these tips will help your family save while still experiencing an enjoyable dining experience.

Simple Living – Amish Values for Your Family {Book Review}

Simple Living at it’s best!

This book is for readers who long for strong families that know how to truly enjoy life together, there is much to learn from the Amish.

Values like community, forgiveness, simple living, obedience, and more can be your family legacy–without selling your car, changing your wardrobe, or moving out to farm country.

On the cover:
In Amish Values for Your Family, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher shows how you can adopt the wisdom of the Amish when it comes to family matters. In this inspiring and practical book readers will find charming true stories interlaced with solid, biblical advice about parenting, marriage, and all aspects of family life. As readers get an intimate glimpse into the everyday lives of real Amish families, they will learn to prioritize what’s truly important, simplify decision-making, slow down as a family, safeguard time together, and let go when the time comes.

My thoughts on Simple Living:
This was truly an easy, inspiring, and encouraging read. I have always been attracted to the Amish simple life style. Not that I have ever wanted to actually become Amish, but simply I marvel at their strong family values by living with less.  I really want my family to engage in a simple life centered around God.

The Amish Values for Your Family is written in simple terms and offers practical suggestions to enhance your family values at the end of each short chapter. I was encouraged by the chapter, Laundry Days.  The dedicated mother chose to continue washing her families laundry by hand rather than using a washing machine.  She valued that precious time because she prayed for each of her children during her laundry day.  Being a mother of 6 children, I often have loads of laundry and many tedious tasks that I tackle each day.  Praying to my Heavenly Father for my dear children puts a whole new light on my chores.

FREE Kindle – Store This! Simple Home Storage Systems

I am always looking for simple ideas to help utilize the space in our home.  Store This! Simple Home Storage Systems looks like an interesting read to get me motivated this Spring.

The book descriptions reads:

From the international bestselling author of ‘Get Organized! Your 12 Month Home Clutter Killer Guide’ comes this all new guide to home storage.

Over the years we are all guilty of gathering a variety of trinkets. Some items we keep have sentimental value and remind us of times past, some we hold onto just in case of emergencies or because we believe that the item may be of use one day, and some items we keep squirreled away are only still around because they have been forgotten about! As each year goes by, we add to this ever expanding collection with further items that fall into these categories and more. Birthdays, holidays, and other important events come and go with alarming regularity, and before long you’re looking around your house wondering why you can’t close the doors on your closets or guest bedroom!

Storing all these items that we accumulate over our lifetimes, is a tedious chore that we are all faced with, many times throughout the decades. I remember very well the time my Mom and Dad first made me decide on which toys to get rid of to clear a space in the clutter of my little shared bedroom, and when I first got in trouble for simply hiding all my toys under the bunk bed instead of cleaning up ‘properly’! Even as adults, most of us still loathe having to take the time to clean and organize.

However, if you want to have a clean home to warmly invite guests into, and to stop losing various items to the gremlins in your walls, then you have to start doing more than just throwing everything into a corner and forgetting about it until Spring Cleaning time!

Follow the various tips and tricks discussed in this book, to start making the maximum use of the storage space your home can provide, and to start storing all your items appropriately, neatly and safely. I’ll be honest – it’s not going to be done in a day, but following my strategies and going through your home room by room, you’ll soon have a home that can comfortably fit everything you need (and more!) whilst remaining entirely clutter-free.

Then all you have to do is maintain it, and that is a much easier and faster job with your new storage solutions in place!
