Preparing for a Home School Covention!

Home school conventions tips
Next week is the annual home school convention in my neck of the woods!

I look forward to it every year, but have spent entirely too much money in the past.  The rays of vibrant colors and the smell of new books can be intoxicating to a homeschool parent and can be quite overwhelming even to the seasoned homeschooler.

My suggestions are…

Pray, Pray, and Pray for discernment.

And Do Your Homework ahead of time!  It takes a lot time, but it can avoid impulsive spending and unhappy choices.

Been there, done that before!

These are a few things that I have done in the last couple of years in in preparing my mind mentally and spiritually at the grand homeschool convention.  I make a spreadsheet or use a spiral for writing down all my homework and bring it with me to the convention. Do whatever works for you, but be prepared.  And always, always bring budgeted CASH!  When you cash is gone, it’s time to go home!

  1. Decide on what particular subjects and topics you are planning on teaching this coming school year. I suggest if you have multiple students than stick to the same topics, but at different levels. Write them down! It’s important to to jot down your specific goals for each subject per child.
  2. Go and check out all your books and curriculum that you already have on each subject. This includes your computer files, too.  It’s amazing the things that I have found in my homeschool computer files that I didn’t know existed from a million moons ago. Make a note of them.
  3. Print a list of the vendors and check out their websites to see which ones spark an interest that coincide with your goals.  Highlight the vendors.  A lot of times they will have a map of the vendor’s booth location on the homeschool convention website.
  4. Price each interesting item new and then look to see how much it’s going for on-line used, for example, Amazon or VegSource.  I honestly rather spend the extra money on a homeschool vendor than on Amazon, but that’s just my opinion. Do not forget to include shipping prices.
  5. I never buy anything until after lunch.  I try to get to the convention as early as possible and browse the entire morning.  This gives you a chance to check out the different prices per vendor and to make sure there isn’t something else that accommodates your goals more efficiently.  Sometimes vendors have specials that are not advertised on the Homeschool Convention website, so keep that in consideration and jot that down as you browse. Talk with the vendors and ask lots of questions.  Touch and feel the curriculum in your hand.  Smell it if you must!  (:
  6. Eat lunch and look over your goals for each student.
  7. Pray, Pray, and Pray!
  8. Go make your discerning and prayerful purchases.
  9. GO HOME!  Don’t look around and second guess your decisions.

If you whole heartily prayed about each one of your purchase decisions then it’s all in His hands!  Your job is to deliver the information to your children, let God do the rest.

Homeschool Product Review – SchoolhouseTeachers.com

PhotobucketHave you checked out SchoolhouseTeachers.com yet? If not, be prepared to be there for awhile, perhaps days!  It truly is that cool!

When asked to review SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I really had no expectations, but was literally blown away with how much content this site offers.  It’s a bit overwhelming at first, but I found the navigation on their site quite easy.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com has replaced the site,Teacher’s Toolbox , offering an enormous expansive of content providing a much brighter spot on the web.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com is organized into 6 main categories that you can find at the top of their header.

    • Schoolhouse Teachers
    • Schoolhouse Dailies
    • Schoolhouse Extras
    • Schoolhouse Libraries
    • Schoolhouse Site Tour
    • Schoolhouse Samples

Since this site offers so much valuable content, I will concentrate on the TOP 5 areas that we will utilize the most in our homeschool this upcoming school year, however, we will use many more, but I don’t want to overwhelm you.

  1. The 2012 – 2013 Schoolhouse planners are absolutely fabulous.  There are 5 different varieties to choose from including planners for your students.  I am a binder girl, so this tickled me pink.  There are over 800 unique printable pages to choose from.  Crazy, huh?
  2. Daily Grammar – my son completes a daily grammar page each school day.  I don’t print the current day, but print older days, so I can print a week’s worth at a time.  This works well for us.
  3. Lapbooks are a big part of our homeschool.  They offer a new one each month.  I believe they are created from Hands of a Child.  You can view previously months, as well.
  4. Literature Class – I am a strong believer in read a louds.  Each month a literature guide and story chart is provided with a new chapter book.  This might be my favorite part of my membership.
  5. Pre K Activities – this reminds me of the series Five In a Row, but on a much lesser scale.  The ideas are fun and engaging, but not time consuming for mommy.  Simply perfect for my 2 year old.

As you can see, this is an incredible new site that offers an enormous amount of useful content.  There is no way I can do SchoolhouseTeachers.com justice, so you must tour it for yourself.  I promise, it’s amazing!

How much does a membership to SchoolhouseTeachers.com cost?

Your monthly membership can begin today with a $1 purchase! After the first month, your credit card or PayPal account on file will be billed at $5.95 each month. You can cancel anytime if not satisfied.

Is this worth it $5.95 each month?  Definitely, in my opinion!

I received an annual membership to schoolhouseTeachers.com in exchange for my honest review.  No other compensation was given.

Coffee Filter Craft for the kiddos! – Guest Post (Allison Stanton)

I am so excited to share with you my friend, Allison from Ally’s Helpful Hints for Mommies!  She is such a sweet and Godly mom who loves to share her heart for her high calling of motherhood.

You must go visit her!  She has lots of fun and creative tips for the busy mommy!

Also, please leave her a comment at the bottom of the post and welcome her!

I Want to share one of our crafts we did recently to decorate a little bit for spring! We made coffee filter flowers this Spring and decorated our play room a little bit!  It is easy and adds some color to our boring windows.

What you need:

I LOVE coffee filters even though I don’t drink coffee and they can be used for so many things and they are inexpensive.

I let my boys paint with a few different colors on the filters. They are thin so you will want to put another one under it or newspaper so you don’t get paint on your table.

While the paint is drying you can cut out some stems and leaves for the body of your flower.  I just cut straight strips and some simple leaves.

I took some packing tape which is stronger and bigger and taped the leaves on and attached it to the flower.

After that we decided where to put them in our play room and taped them on our window! This is our finished product! My four year old was pleased and declared that the blue one was his favorite, of course!

Fun activity to do for Spring and Summer.

If you wanted different shapes you could cut the coffee filter a little bit too and make tulips or any other flower you want.

What fun flowers have you made lately?

End of the Year Recognition!

FREE printable certificates!

Each year my dh and I recognize each one of our children with a certificate at the end of the school year.

We really want to stress righteous character traits in our children, as well as, academics.  We recognize each child with an outstanding character trait and an academic subject that they have portrayed excellence throughout the school year.  It always builds their self esteem when we recognize an area in which they improved in that was difficult for them.

We have a graduation/recognition night with our homeschool group, but it would be very easy to have a little end of the school year party with just your family.  Invite the grandparents, too. My children love to show off their notebooks and their projects to others.

What do you do to celebrate the end of a school year?  Or do you homeschool all year?

Kids Art Crafts – Elective CENTSIble Homeschooling

I love to allow my children to be crafty on Fridays.  I try to make Friday’s a light school day and crafts are always a big hit, especially on a rainy day or in our case a blazon hot day in our neck of the woods in Texas.

Busy Bee Craft Kids has a lots of cute FREE crafts that require simple items that you probably already have on hand.  They have holiday, animal, and edible crafts, too.  Also, if you visit their sister site, you will find tons of FREE printables.

The Spring Crafts look like a lot of fun for my preschooler and kindergartener. My children love learning about nature.  What a memorable hands on activity to wrap up a study of birds or butterflies.
