Brief History of Valentine’s Day

As we all believe, Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday created by the greeting card industry. However, there is a history to Valentine’s Day steeped in both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.  Based on these traditions, February has been celebrated as the month of romance; but who was Saint Valentine?

There are at least three different saints named St. Valentine, all of whom were martyred into sainthood.

The first such saint was a Roman priest who lived in the third century under Emperor Claudius II. Claudius believed that unmarried men made better soldiers, therefore he outlawed marriage for young men who could serve in the army. It is said that this priest defied the Emperor by marrying young men and their bride in secret. As a result of his actions, Claudius had the priest put to death.

The second saint is recognized as being Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

The third saint is recognized as being a man who was put to death for helping Christians escape Roman prisons where they were tortured. It is said that this Valentine was a prisoner himself and he sent the first valentine to a young girl whom he fell in love with while she would visit him. It is believed that he sent her a note with the salutation “From your Valentine“, which is still used today.

We may never know exactly which tale is true, or if it is a combination of these stories; but, we still celebrate this tradition every February 14. For more about the history of St. Valentine’s Day, visit the History Channel‘s website.

With the fruit of the spirit, I say, “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)

May God grant you eternal life!
