March always makes me think of rainbows. Well, lions, lambs, leprechauns, gold and rainbows. I don’t really celebrate St. Patrick’s day, but the childhood games are well etched in my mind. My kids and I have talked about the stories of searching for gold at the ends of rainbows and that makes for some great imaginative expression.

Of course, I have literalists in my house so my girls always end with a discussion of how rainbows are really created and they are always more amazed by light refraction than the possibility of a pot of gold. A definite result of home schooling, I’m sure. My kids are always excited about the different ways God has chosen to make our world beautiful.

Rainbows remind us of possibilities beyond ourselves. Something that we can always reach for because the end never seems to be in reach. They also make our world a more colorful and beautiful place. I have a fun Pinterest board simply dedicated to the colors of the rainbow and lots of activities to teach about them. I hope you will follow and get some great ideas for teaching color recognition and exploration.

March is a great time to teach about rainbows. My kindergartener is starting to read, so I created a color recognition printable set to go along with our explorations for the the month. In fact I created two packs. One, freebie that I am sharing here with all of you today and another that can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store: Life Over C’s.

The free pack includes a mini-book for learning color words, some fun clip cards, fold-over flash cards and a matching game.

The mega-pack includes play dough mats, non-standard measurement, sorting mats, and a whole lot more!

To make the clip cards a little more fun and to add a different element of fine-motor skills, I punched holes around the cards. Then, I provided my kindergarten with a variety of colors of pipe cleaners and allowed her to show the matching colors by threading the string and pipe cleaners through the correct holes and twisting them.
