Homophones can be tricky to teach to your students. I found that it’s just best to have the students memorize the common homophones. I have introduced a homophone of the week to my class and have made a simple homophone memory game with index cards for student centers.

Here are FREE Homophone Worksheets that will help your students master homophones. Check out my weekly idea!

Two words are homophones if they are pronounced the same way but differ in meaning or spelling or both (e.g. bare and bear). Typically, you have to listen to the context to know which word someone means if they’re spoken aloud.

While teaching for the state exam to my students, I always encourage them to utilize the dictionary and thesaurus. Texas students are now allowed to use a dictionary for the reading and writing STAAR exams.
