How To Homeschool – 10 Steps!

school

Homeschooling is a wonderful way to stay connected to your children while helping them become well-rounded adults and our future leaders.  It offers you the opportunity to tailor your children’s education to suit your children, your lifestyle, and your beliefs. Being able to train my children to think from a biblical worldview is one of the greatest benefits of homeschooling.

I have listed 10 things that I wished I knew before we started homeschooling 9 years ago.  The internet was fairly new and I really did not have any support except for a few local friends.  And you know who you are!

The TOP 10 Steps to Homeschooling

  1. Pray, Pray, and Pray daily
  2. Create an Education Mission Statement – what are your goals for your homeschool
  3. Familiarize yourself with your state’s guidelines
  4. Determine Your Home Education Style – really spend time on researching the different approaches that suit you and your children’s learning style
  5. Research the different curriculum – look on line, read reviews, and go to homeschool conventions, and used curriculum stores to try to actually get your hands on it.  Smell it!  And make sure you love it!
  6. Utilize FREE homeschool resources and buy used if possible
  7. Start planning your homeschool planning – lots of FREE homeschool planners
  8. Get involved in a local homeschool group – you need a support group and scheduled field trips to keep your sanity!  Trust ME!
  9. Join several homeschool support groups on-line – take advantage of this!  The support on-line is wonderful!
  10. Get the grade-level thing out of your head – I can’t stress this enough!  Don’t try to mimic the public school.  Go at your student’s pace or you will drown.  Use the recommendations as a guide not a master.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about our homeschool journey.  I am not an expert by any means, but might be able to steer you in the right direction.  Please join our facebook community where we discuss homeschool and many other topics that inspires the homeschool mom.

9 Tips for Preparing Your Child for Summer Camp and Waterproof Bible Giveaway!

Prepare your child for summer camp - 9 Tips

Summer Camp can be a wonderful experience for children during their youth years.  They can grow emotionally and spiritually during their stay.  However, it can also be a scary experience for some children.

Here are a few tips that will help your child have a wonderful experience at camp:

  1. Learn the focus of the camp, and pray for your child’s spiritual and personal needs.
  2. Help your child pack and double-check the camp check-list.  Your child will know where everything is located in their suitcase.
  3. Get to know the camp officials and chaperones.  Introduce your child to them.  I personally will not allow my children to go on a youth trip unless there is a chaperone that I personally know.
  4. Talk about What if’s situations for different unexpected events.  Role play different scenarios.  Discuss bullying.
  5. Discuss the communication policies with your children.  Have addressed envelopes with stamps in their suitcase.
  6. Openly discuss homesickness with your child.  This is very common and most camp officials are trained in this area to console your child.
  7. Send a family picture or a little photo album with the child for when they get homesick.
  8. Talk about baptism openly with your child.  Request that they inform you before they make the life changing decision.
  9. Pack a Bible and share some of your favorite verses with your child.  This will be a keepsake for them.

FREE Book of Galatians Bible Study Schedule and Notebook Pages!

FREE Galatians Bible Notebook Pages

FREE Galatians Bible Notebook Pages

The Book of Galatians is a book that will help you understand that we are saved by faith alone.

Paul goes to great length to explain to the believer that we are no longer under the law but we are saved by faith alone.  Paul was teaching to the churches in Galatia.  They were scattered all over a ruarl district.  False teachers had begun in the country.  The false teachers were stressing that salvation comes through works.

Marvel how Paul shuts out all legalism.

I want to encourage you to study a chapter of Galatians each dayfor six days.  I have included a Book of Galatians daily schedule and notebook pages for your convenience.

I used the S.O.A.P. method each morning during myJames bible study.  In case you are not familiar with the S.O.A.P. method, you can read a previous post that I wrote about utilizing the S.O.A.P. method.

I challenge you to let the Holy Spirit enlighten you while you marvel in the Holy Spirit’s words spoken through Paul!  His Word is powerful!

Satan wants to do anything and everything to keep you out of His Holy Word.  If you skip a day, don’t give up, just continue where you left off.

Discovering Our Amazing God With Your Child!

grapevine

Discovering our Amazing God is the first series in the inductive Bible curriculum produced by Deeper Roots Publication and is designed for the 7th grader or can easily be used for older children. My freshman has almost completed the entire study. This is a deep spiritual study for the student that focuses on some of the less familiar stories and events in the Bible. The student will gain an appreciation of the agape love God has for them as individuals.

My son and I engage in Discovering Our Amazing God for about ten time each day.  I utilize the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guides to help me prepare for each lesson.  The teacher’s notes located in the margin are very easy to comprehend and gives you step by step instructions requiring very little prep time for me.

Each of the 9 lessons are designed to take 10 days, however, it is easily adaptable to fit your student’s schedule.  It takes my child 10-15 minutes to complete each lesson individually.  It has instilled a daily Bible reading habit within him.  He looks forward to spending time and learning about our Saviour.

After he completes his independent study, we go over the memory challenge each day before we begin the day’s lesson.  My child needs to come prepared to recite the memory verse/challenge each Friday.  The curriculum suggests you make the memory challenge cumulative throughout the semester.  Fridays are always good days for reviews in our home. The teacher guide gives numerous suggestions for the memory challenge reviews which I found helpful.

In addition, each lesson entails a review and test to reinforce the student’s understanding. We discuss the test and review questions orally. Also, there are several creative cartoons/drawings, and suggested activities that are recommended in the bible curriculum.  My son really finds these cartoons amusing.

My child appreciated the unreached people group profile in the beginning of each lesson.  We talked about the 10-40 Window and God’s Missionary purposes.  We prayed the suggested focus prayer at the beginning of each lesson, too.  He also likes how he can take the Bible lessons and apply it to his everyday life.

In addition to the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guide there is the Student Workbook which includes reflections/journal pages to help students organize and record their new appreciation for our amazing God.  A nice journal for the older student, my older son records his thoughts in the student guide with the additional writing assignments.

One of the ways this bible curriculum is unique is that it moves the students from biblical knowledge to spiritual application.  Also, we enjoyed the in-depth discussion that the questions inspired between parent and child.

Right now Deeper Roots has a FREE gift for you, Devotional for the Homeschool Mom.  It truly is wonderful.

Make Your Own Unleavened Bread with your Children!

communion

One of our favorite churches that we used to attend makes their own Unleavened Bread each Sunday.

We had an Unleavened Bread committee and each of us took turns making the Lord’s Supper.  It truly is a blessing to make.  I always have my children help me, too.

I have kept the recipe for our own family’s time of worship.  It makes a lot, so you can freeze the left overs or you can just eat it because it is quite tasty!

For  I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” I Corinthians 11-23-24

I pray this recipe is a blessing to you and your family.  Feel free to share!

We are going to partake in the Lord’s supper this Holy Week!
