Biblical Bible training in our homeschool is the most imperative subject we cover each day!

The Child Training Bible is a tool that allows you to train your children to go directly to the pages of Scripture for guidance in 20 key areas with a complete section dedicated to the gospel.

Character education goes hand and hand with God’s Holy Word.

How the Child Training Bible Works for Us

I decided to highlight the Bible myself before introducing the children to the tool.  However, it is was very time consuming.  If I was to do it again, we would highlight together one of the 20 topics each day.  And then discuss as we go.

We have one universal Bible that we use as a family Bible.  Each morning, we pick one of the topics that we feel we need to work on during our biblical Bible training time.  We talk about the definition of the topic and we each think of an example on what it means to demonstrate that particular character trait.  Each child is assigned the suggested verses to read out loud.

We found the cover page that acts as an index very helpful.  My early reader had no trouble looking up the scripture quickly.

Motivated Moms Chore Schedule and (3) Giveaways!

I LOVE the Motivated Moms chore schedule!

I have used it for 6 years now along with my children.

I never feel stressed out when I know house guest are coming.

I never spend all day cleaning either when I get that phone call at noon inquiring if we could meet at my house for bible study that particular evening.

This chore chart helps you and your family spread out your cleaning chores in daily segments. It suggest tasks that I would have a tendency to overlook, for example, clean light switches, clean out purse, clip children’s nails, and wipe out refrigerator and of course the obvious daily chores, too.

If you don’t get to that particular task that week, then just complete it the next time it comes around on your list. No big deal!

I prefer the half sized planner and usually print out 6 weeks at a time.  I go through each 6 weeks in one sitting and mark the the chores that I am responsible for with MOM next to it.  Next, I go through the chore list and highlight each chore with one of four colors.  Each child has a designated color making it easy for them to recognize what chore they are responsible for that week.

Sometimes I move chores around depending on what’s going that particular week. For example, if we are having company over on Friday, I might schedule the bathrooms and the vacuum cleaning for Friday.  It’s very easy to moderate.

Being a Christian wife is a high calling, and I often struggle in this area.

I whole heartily want to be a Christian wife that will compliment my dear husband.

Often my husband gets the last bit of my energy each day.

I often have my priorities out of order.

I have been gleaning the Godly wisdom published by Doorpost, As Unto the Lord, spiral-bound book for the last six months.

As Unto the Lord  will assist you in the following areas:

  • Identify areas of sin and negligence
  • Memorize Scripture as a defense against the temptations unique to wives
  • Pray for God’s guidance and changing power in your life

As Unto the Lord includes:

  • A short set of questions and relevant Scripture passages for daily review. These are designed to help wives prayerfully examine their attitudes and actions in the light of God’s Word.
  • An in-depth, expanded series of almost 200 questions, each followed by Scripture which explains what God commands of us as wives. How it Works for Me

As I mentioned before, I am sinner saved by His grace alone and struggle at times with my role as a Christian wife.

I found As Unto the Lord an eye opener book.  I considered it more of a manual than a book.  My favorite part of the book is the Daily Checklist.

Each evening, I go over the list and make note of the areas I need repenting.  I immediately turn to the recommended pages that include scripture references to help me in my calling as a Christian wife.

Next, I pray for the Lord’s forgiveness and then I must ask my dear husband for his forgiveness.

I mark the scripture references in the book with a sticky note, so I can mediate on them during my early morning devotion time.

I still have a lot of improvement in this area, but As Unto the Lord holds me accountable.  It has been a very helpful tool for me.  I would love to complete this book as a bible study with other women striving to be a Christian wife.

I am anxious to implement this book with my only daughter when she is the appropriate age.  I believe every mother should introduce this helpful tool to their daughters.  Being a Christian wife according to biblical terms is not the norm today.  Society calls wives who diligently strive to be helpmeets to their husbands weak.

May we train our daughter otherwise, my sisters!

Teaching Character Education in the Homeschool

How it works for our family

Our family concentrates on one new virtue a week while reviewing the previous virtues.  With little or no prep time, and the suggested 10 minutes of teaching virtues each day, I am amazed how quickly my whole family learns and applies each new virtue!  Even though the curriculum is geared towards younger children, my high schoolers participate and help remind the little ones of the virtues when needed.  This will continue to be a constant work in progress!
Each Monday, I introduce the specific virtue card to the children.  The little ones color the virtue page from the FREE PDF coloring book that comes with the kit during our discussion time.  We talk about ways we can demonstrate the virtue and specific examples of neglecting to demonstrate the character trait.  It took several weeks for the children to recognize their struggles, but they are pin pointing their issues more freely each week.  We review the memory verse and parenting cards each day throughout the week.
We have the Three Rule Poster and Kid’s Virtue Poster on our refrigerator.  I continue to add the mini posters in our school room as we discuss new weekly virtues.  I recommend laminating them for longer use.

We will utilize the 100 Days Virtue Chart, stickers, and pad after we have completed all 12 virtues.  I love the concept that the whole family must demonstrate the virtue of the day in order to get a sticker.  This will encourage accountability.

I plan on purchasing a fun hat for the little ones to wear when they exhibit excellence virtue for the day.  This was a clever and fun idea that was suggested in the parent guide.

Results of We Choose Virtues in our Family

Last summer, my younger sons 7 and 5 were spending the week at my parents house.  They went to the pool and had to wait 3 hours until the thunder depleted.  Each time it thundered, they would say, “I’ll wait, and I’ll wait, and I”ll wait with a smile on my face.

They have more patience than their mama!

Also, my 3 year old repeats the virtue statements throughout the day.  She might not understand what they truly mean, but she will eventually.

Missionary Children Stories that will have your Family on Pins and Needles!

Our family has long sought interesting children stories that are capable of keeping our children entertained as well as providing positive character.

We have been big fans of the Jonathan Park series for years, so we were thrilled to find another radio drama resource, The Brinkman Adventures, with similar values.  While Jonathan Park focuses on the beauty of Creation, The Brinkman Adventures series targets true geography and courageous missionary adventures for the entire family.

We received the The Brinkman Advetnures Season 1 (4) CD collection before Christmas and we all have listened to each story several times.  These real-life stories have been highly enjoyable for our large family.  The sound effects are incredible, especially while driving in the car.  The kids practically jump out their seats during each episode.  Each CD consists of 3 episodes with approximately 75 minutes of adventure, totaling 5 hours of entertainment.

These wholesome missionary children stories will challenge and fill your family with God’s truth.  Each episodes teaches a character lesson and takes you to a land far away.  Also, you can print coloring sheets to go along with the episodes 1-6 to keep little ones busy.  My children ages 3-16 were in awe of God’s provision throughout each episode.  Having an atlas handy was a thrill for all of them, too.

The season has made our family nights even more wholesome and entertaining, of course we added a little  popcorn to make it an “official”family night.

My hair is rather long and I have a lot of it. Most hair clips never seem to hold all my hair.

Teachable Economics for Children!

Easy and understandable economics for childrenFinding suitable economics for children material isn’t always an easy task.

I was thrilled to find the wonderful book, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? and study guide, A Bluestocking Guide Economics.  Initially, I was searching for the typical high school economics text book to meet the state requirement, but was blessed to stumble across these resources to teach my high schoolers the basis of economics.

Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? is a FUN way to learn about the basis of economics for success in children’s  future career, business, and investment needs.  The book is based on Maybury’s “letter” format text involving numerous correspondences between an uncle and nephew.  It explains economics in a simple and understandable text making the subjects of  recession, money, inflation, boom & bust cycles, government spending, Gresham’s Law and several other subjects entertaining.  The book is written for ages 9 to adult.

The  A Bluestocking Guide Economics is designed to enhance the student’s understanding and knowledge of the subject matter.  This is a wonderful supplement for the book, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?  It is very adaptable to fit your student’s needs.

.A Bluestocking Guide: Economics includes:

  • Chapter-by-chapter comprehension questions and answers for the book Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?
  • suggested activities,
  • application exercises
  • articles that enhance on the points presented in the book, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?,
  • a list of recommended movies and documentaries that contain good economic history,
  • a list of appropriate economic web sites,
  •  a final exam

Also included is an economic timetable that can be used to fill in the economic history that is usually missing from history books, historical fiction, historical movies, documentaries, etc. This was a HUGE plus for us.

This study guide is designed for multi-ages, 13 through 18,  as an independent study.

I am giving my high schoolers an Economic credit for reading the book and completing the suggested assignments in the study guide.  However, if you feel that your students need additional study material for state requirements, Bluestocking Press offers a complete Economic high school package.

How It Worked For Us

I have 2 high schoolers who enjoyed reading Whatever Happened to Penny.  Each week, I would assign one chapter and they each were expected to turn in the suggested definitions, short answer questions and I would pick one essay question for them to complete by Friday.

My children found the book very interesting and easy to understand.   They felt the assignments in A Bluestocking Guide Economics were quite simple, but gave them a greater understanding of the basis of Economics.

They also expanded their economic knowledge by reading several interesting of the books selections in For Further Reading in the back of the study guide.

My husband and I enjoyed many intellectual conversations regarding our current economy with our children over supper.  Needless to say, they are astonished at the condition of our current government and economy.

I plan on reading this book to my younger children as a read a loud.  It would also make a wonderful read during family nights. The study guide is not neccessary as a read a loud, but was a very helpful supplement for my independent students.
