Teaching Our Children the Godly Famous Composers

Can your children recognize the famous Godly composers when they hear a piece of their music?

I have to admit, I am a bit challenged when it comes to the fine arts and I was never exposed to classical music growing up. I do however want my children to appreciate the Godly composers from our past.

My goal is not to necessarily make them Classical Music lovers, but simply to make them aware of what is defined as pleasant music to the ear and what is acceptable to the Lord.

Color the Classics: Godly Composer is such a fun way to introduce your family to the famous composers that dedicated their music gift to the Lord. This simple, but thorough curriculum will help your children to understand the history behind the pieces of timeless music.

There are (4) composers introduced in this book: Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, and Haydn.

Each composer has 7 simple lessons that includes the biography and interesting facts, as well as vocabulary words. Included in the book are several coloring pages to go along with the lessons. The 55 minute CD that is included in this bundle consists of 3 pieces of music from each composer. Also, there is a very helpful timeline at the end of the book and suggested resources to expand on your study for the older children.

How Color the Classics works for our Family

Our entire family has been enjoying the Color the Classics this past month. We have been going over (2) lessons at a time. I print out the appropriate coloring pages for each one of my children, including my high schoolers. The copyright terms allows you to print additional coloring pages for your own family. The younger ones enjoy coloring the pages during the lesson, as well as, listening to the music by the composer after the lesson. The older children write notes on the back of the coloring sheet and are required to find additional information about each composer we study either on the Internet or books that we have collected in our library.

I am going to require my high schoolers to write an essay on their favorite Godly composer after we finish the book. I also encourage my little ones to complete a notebook page after we study each composer. They also put their coloring pages in their history notebooks.

My younger children absolutely adore listening to the CD before they go to bed each night.

Teaching our Children the God of Creation

As Christian homeschool parents, one of our goals is to teach our children the truth about creation.

God is the creator of all things.

We have used READS many ways in our home in the last month and ways to utilize this program are endless. My second grader has been enjoying using the magic finger during his independent reading time. This helps him stay focused. I have him pick a card before he starts reading his book that he selected. I then make sure he is very clear on what the question is asking him to look for during the story.

After he finishes reading his book, he comes and answers his specific question that he selected. Many times he comes and tells me as I am preparing our lunch. He also has a book report form that he fills out, too. He uses the speedy speller to look up any words he does not know how to spell. The Speedy Speller is very helpful for him. You will need to purchase one for each child, but they are very reasonably priced. I only allow him to put one sticker on the goal sheet per day because he would fill up the entire sheet in a few days.

My son also loves to read to his younger siblings. They take turns picking out a card to determine what they are going to discuss after the story. They do this during their leisure time. I love hearing their intellectual discussions. It’s a fun activity for them.

Also, we have picked a card during our read a loud time. This has helped with the little ones staying focused and quiet. Everyone is always anxious to answer the question at the end of our time together. You can also use these cards with older children, however I recommend just asking them one of the questions because the cards were developed for younger children. I have done this several times with my 12 year old.

I honestly believe every family needs the READS Parent/Child Reading Comprehension System in their home whether you homeschool or not. How it works for our family

Our family concentrates on one new virtue a week while reviewing the previous virtues. With little or no prep time, and the suggested 10 minutes of teaching virtues each day, I am amazed how quickly my whole family learns and applies each new virtue! Even though the curriculum is geared towards younger children, my high schoolers participate and help remind the little ones of the virtues when needed. This will continue to be a constant work in progress!

Each Monday, I introduce the specific virtue card to the children. The little ones color the virtue page from the FREE PDF coloring book that comes with the kit during our discussion time. We talk about ways we can demonstrate the virtue and specific examples of neglecting to demonstrate the character trait. It took several weeks for the children to recognize their struggles, but they are pin pointing their issues more freely each week. We review the memory verse and parenting cards each day throughout the week.

We have the Three Rule Poster and Kid’s Virtue Poster on our refrigerator. I continue to add the mini posters in our school room as we discuss new weekly virtues. I recommend laminating them for longer use.

We will utilize the 100 Days Virtue Chart, stickers, and pad after we have completed all 12 virtues. I love the concept that the whole family must demonstrate the virtue of the day in order to get a sticker. This will encourage accountability.

I plan on purchasing a fun hat for the little ones to wear when they exhibit excellence virtue for the day. This was a clever and fun idea that was suggested in the parent guide.

Results of We Choose Virtues in our Family

Last summer, my younger sons 7 and 5 were spending the week at my parents house. They went to the pool and had to wait 3 hours until the thunder depleted. Each time it thundered, they would say, “I’ll wait, and I’ll wait, and I”ll wait with a smile on my face.

They have more patience than their mama!

Also, my 3 year old repeats the virtue statements throughout the day. She might not understand what they truly mean, but she will eventually.

Discovering Our Amazing God With Your Child!

Discovering our Amazing God is the first series in the inductive Bible curriculum produced by Deeper Roots Publication and is designed for the 7th grader or can easily be used for older children. My freshman has almost completed the entire study. This is a deep spiritual study for the student that focuses on some of the less familiar stories and events in the Bible. The student will gain an appreciation of the agape love God has for them as individuals.

My son and I engage in Discovering Our Amazing God for about ten time each day. I utilize the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guides to help me prepare for each lesson. The teacher’s notes located in the margin are very easy to comprehend and gives you step by step instructions requiring very little prep time for me.

Each of the 9 lessons are designed to take 10 days, however, it is easily adaptable to fit your student’s schedule. It takes my child 10-15 minutes to complete each lesson individually. It has instilled a daily Bible reading habit within him. He looks forward to spending time and learning about our Saviour.

After he completes his independent study, we go over the memory challenge each day before we begin the day’s lesson. My child needs to come prepared to recite the memory verse/challenge each Friday. The curriculum suggests you make the memory challenge cumulative throughout the semester. Fridays are always good days for reviews in our home. The teacher guide gives numerous suggestions for the memory challenge reviews which I found helpful.

In addition, each lesson entails a review and test to reinforce the student’s understanding. We discuss the test and review questions orally. Also, there are several creative cartoons/drawings, and suggested activities that are recommended in the bible curriculum. My son really finds these cartoons amusing.

My child appreciated the unreached people group profile in the beginning of each lesson. We talked about the 10-40 Window and God’s Missionary purposes. We prayed the suggested focus prayer at the beginning of each lesson, too. He also likes how he can take the Bible lessons and apply it to his everyday life.

In addition to the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guide there is the Student Workbook which includes reflections/journal pages to help students organize and record their new appreciation for our amazing God. A nice journal for the older student, my older son records his thoughts in the student guide with the additional writing assignments.

One of the ways this bible curriculum is unique is that it moves the students from biblical knowledge to spiritual application. Also, we enjoyed the in-depth discussion that the questions inspired between parent and child.

How to Draw Cartoons – It’s easy!

My children have been having a ball learning how to draw cartoons!

My children ages 16-6 all completed this lesson together. The lesson takes aprroximatly 60 minutes to complete, however, they broke it up into 2 days. They did pause the video several times in order for my 6 year old to catch up. They all completed the lesson at ease and were thrilled to show me their master pieces.

I have to admit, I was highly impressed with the outcome.

We were able to get the supplies at Walmart required to complete the lesson.

•Several sheets of plain white paper (any size)
•A #2 pencil
•A pencil sharpener
•Good white or gray kneaded eraser
•A fine point black marker
•A thick black permanent marker

My children continue to draw creative cartoons. I am having so much fun seeing all their creative people on the refridgerator. It makes me smile.

Building Their Faith with Missionary Stories!

I have always been fascinated while reading missionary stories.

And I adore sharing them with my children.

We have been traveling with Gladys Aylward through China this week. All my 6 children and I snuggle on my bed after lunch to discover how God’s provision affected her couarageous life working for the King. These true stories have encouraged us all to step out of our confort zone to spread His Holy Word to the lost.

Etiquette For Children has Never Been Easier!

Have you been wanting to instill etiquette lessons for your children in your home?

It seems in today’s world, proper etiquette is expected but not readily taught among youngsters.

Being a mom of 6 children, I must admit training in proper etiquette is important to me, but I don’t seem to make it a priority.

I just didn’t know where to begin.

Until recently.

How It Works for Us

We have at least one child in each of the 3 Phase Learning Program, so we are able to utilize the entire program.

Each morning after Bible, the little ones and I watch the designated short video for the day in Etiquette Beginner 1. There are 12 weeks of different etiquette tips that easily teaches the little ones application and examples of how to demonstrate that particular manner. There are questions at the end of each lessons that we discuss. It only takes us about 10 minutes to complete the entire lesson each day. However, my 3 year old insists we watch the video at least 2x each day. She adores Mary Manners!

Included in the program is a FUN CD, The Etiquette Jukebox, with all the catchy tunes that corresponds with the lessons each week. The children love to sing a long in the car. However, my teenagers are not too fond of their younger siblings new favorite CD. Hee Hee!

My 11 year old son is independently reading through the Etiquette Intermediate 2 that consists of 125 days worth of lessons. There is a brief lesson that includes a short activity that takes about 15 minutes per day. During our lunch hour, we discuss what he has read and he must tell me ways he can demonstrate that particular etiquette. He really enjoys completing the short, yet concise lessons each day. It’s one of his favorite subjects this year.

My older boys are both working through the Etiquette Masters course. I am very impress with this handbook. It’s covers invaluable insight on etiquette in dating, job hunting, employment and even being a future roommate from a conservative view point. This is a short, easy to ready handbook with lasting results. I believe every teen should read this BEFORE they begin dating, working or going off to college. After each chapter, we discuss in depth the lesson together. I do think it’s important that the parent reinforces the lesson with discussion.

We have had great success with 3 Phase Learning Program. And my children LOVE to play the game, Blunders, to reinforce the etiquette lessons we are learning throughout the week. The game is designed for ages 5-10, but our whole family enjoys it.
