FREE ABC Animal Playdough Mats!

ABC playdoughmats

We love playdough at our home.

I created these FUN ABC animal playdough mats to help my three old learn her letters and sounds.  She rolls out the playdough to form each letter. I also have her create the picture and something else that starts with the particular letter she is working on with the playdough.  My 6 year old helps her come up with another object many times, too.  It’s great review for him.

Here’s loads of every DIY playdough recipe imaginary to the homeschool mama.

FREE Sermon on the Mount Copywork!

FREE Sermon on the Mount Copywork

My affiiate links have been used in this post.  Read my full disclosure policy.

I want my children to memorize The Sermon on the Mount and honestly I have never memorized Matthew 5 myself.

Each day the children will copy and memorize one verse.  Drawing a picture will help them meditate on each verse throughout the day.  We also will be looking up any unfamiliar vocabulary with the Bible Dictionary.

Your child will have memorized The Sermon on the Mount in 11 days when you have completed this copywork.

Also, we like to read the summary of the passage in The Journey Through the Bible on the first day of the study.

I created the Sermon on the Mount Copywork exclusively for my email subscribers.  When you become an email subscriber, you will recieve the download in your welcome email.  You will also be informed of weekly homeschool freebies and educational deals for the homeschool family.  If you are already a subscriber, your link will be in the Friday, April 26th weekly newsletter.

Teaching Character Education in the Home!

This is a sponsored post.  All opinions are 100 % my own.  Affiliate links have been used in this post.  Read my full disclosure policy.

Character Education goes hand and hand with God’s Word.

The character we exhibit has a dramatic impact not only on how we treat our family and community members, but also has a direct role in our success in spreading the Gospel, as well as, becoming tomorrows leaders.

The We Choose Virtue homeschool faith based kit includes everything you need to train your children ages 3-12  in righteous biblical character that will instill timeless values.

What’s included in the Homeschool Kit?

    •  The Kids Virtue Poster
    •  The Three Rules Poster
    •  13 Parenting Cards
    •  3 Kids of Virtueville Mini Posters
    •  12 Flash Cards
    •  1 pad/25ct Virtue User Review
    • 100 Days of Virtue Chart and stickers

How it works for our family

Our family concentrates on one new virtue a week while reviewing the previous virtues.  With little or no prep time, and the suggested 10 minutes of teaching virtues each day, I am amazed how quickly my whole family learns and applies each new virtue!  Even though the curriculum is geared towards younger children, my high schoolers participate and help remind the little ones of the virtues when needed.  This will continue to be a constant work in progress!
Each Monday, I introduce the specific virtue card to the children.  The little ones color the virtue page from the FREE PDF coloring book that comes with the kit during our discussion time.  We talk about ways we can demonstrate the virtue and specific examples of neglecting to demonstrate the character trait.  It took several weeks for the children to recognize their struggles, but they are pin pointing their issues more freely each week.  We review the memory verse and parenting cards each day throughout the week.
We have the Three Rule Poster and Kid’s Virtue Poster on our refrigerator.  I continue to add the mini posters in our school room as we discuss new weekly virtues.  I recommend laminating them for longer use.

We will utilize the 100 Days Virtue Chart, stickers, and pad after we have completed all 12 virtues.  I love the concept that the whole family must demonstrate the virtue of the day in order to get a sticker.  This will encourage accountability.

I plan on purchasing a fun hat for the little ones to wear when they exhibit excellence virtue for the day.  This was a clever and fun idea that was suggested in the parent guide.

Results of We Choose Virtues in our Family

Last summer, my younger sons 7 and 5 were spending the week at my parents house.  They went to the pool and had to wait 3 hours until the thunder depleted.  Each time it thundered, they would say, “I’ll wait, and I’ll wait, and I”ll wait with a smile on my face.

They have more patience than their mama!

Also, my 3 year old repeats the virtue statements throughout the day.  She might not understand what they truly mean, but she will eventually.

The Easiest Record System Ever (with free download)

Easiest Homeschool Record System Ever

You’re really busy homeschooling. You don’t need a record keeping system that makes extra work for you. In fact, you’d love a system that your kids can use independently. I have just such a system and it’s FREE. Interested? Read on.

I Tried it All

I’ve been keeping homeschool records for nine years for as many as five of my six children at a time. I’ve tried something different every one of those nine years. My goal was to not only keep track of my children’s work for legal purposes, but to give my children their assignments to work on independently.

I’m a technology lover, so I was sure that one of the digital record software programs would work for me. But every one of them resulted in:

  • Long hours inputting data for up to five children
  • Time-consuming adjustments to the schedule when work was missed
  • My having to approve each student’s completed assignments

While I think some of these programs could have worked for me if I had fewer children, I found myself incredibly frustrated.

Things improved when I switched to paper record keeping. I kept a record of all group activities. The kids had one general schedule of what to do each day. The problem was I was still responsible for all the record keeping and having to ask each child what he got done.

The Linda Hobar Way

I was wondering what other changes I could make to improve my record keeping when a friend told me about Linda Hobar’s method. (Linda is the author of the Mystery of History curriculum.) Here’s the gist of it:

  • Each school year is divided into quarters
  • Work that is expected for each quarter is put behind a binder tab
  • Students can work ahead on preferred subjects, but must complete all work by the end of the quarter

Homeschool Records Form Completed

I decided to combine her advice with some principles that worked for me. I created a weekly form listing each subject/book on the left. Rather than assigning specific page numbers as I had done in the past, I was assigning one lesson or page per day, unless I indicated otherwise (e.g., Handwriting, 2 pgs.). The days of the week were indicated in columns on the right. I used check boxes to indicate how many times a week that I expected the work to be done (and suggested days on which to do it). I left an Other section for indicating activities not regularly scheduled.

I created forms and a binder with dated quarterly tabs for myself and each of the kids. Rather than use check boxes to indicate a certain time period, I chose to plan how much time a subject would require in advance. In other words, a science lesson would take an hour whereas handwriting would only take 15 minutes. Including the group activities that I track, I made sure that each child would more than enough activities to meet the hourly requirements for the end of the year for my state. This eliminated the time I had to spend adding up hours for each child.

The end result is my children love it and so do I. They’ve become completely independent in completing their school work. I throw in some extra motivation to get done with a quarter by promising to take everyone out for a treat.

I’d like to give you a treat, too! I have a free template  in Word for you to make your own homeschool forms. If you take the summer off and you’d like to give this approach a try before next fall, you might consider creating a summer binder of work you’d like the kids to complete to stay fresh.

Do you have any other suggestions for making record keeping easier?

Discovering Our Amazing God With Your Child!

grapevine

Discovering our Amazing God is the first series in the inductive Bible curriculum produced by Deeper Roots Publication and is designed for the 7th grader or can easily be used for older children. My freshman has almost completed the entire study. This is a deep spiritual study for the student that focuses on some of the less familiar stories and events in the Bible. The student will gain an appreciation of the agape love God has for them as individuals.

My son and I engage in Discovering Our Amazing God for about ten time each day.  I utilize the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guides to help me prepare for each lesson.  The teacher’s notes located in the margin are very easy to comprehend and gives you step by step instructions requiring very little prep time for me.

Each of the 9 lessons are designed to take 10 days, however, it is easily adaptable to fit your student’s schedule.  It takes my child 10-15 minutes to complete each lesson individually.  It has instilled a daily Bible reading habit within him.  He looks forward to spending time and learning about our Saviour.

After he completes his independent study, we go over the memory challenge each day before we begin the day’s lesson.  My child needs to come prepared to recite the memory verse/challenge each Friday.  The curriculum suggests you make the memory challenge cumulative throughout the semester.  Fridays are always good days for reviews in our home. The teacher guide gives numerous suggestions for the memory challenge reviews which I found helpful.

In addition, each lesson entails a review and test to reinforce the student’s understanding. We discuss the test and review questions orally. Also, there are several creative cartoons/drawings, and suggested activities that are recommended in the bible curriculum.  My son really finds these cartoons amusing.

My child appreciated the unreached people group profile in the beginning of each lesson.  We talked about the 10-40 Window and God’s Missionary purposes.  We prayed the suggested focus prayer at the beginning of each lesson, too.  He also likes how he can take the Bible lessons and apply it to his everyday life.

In addition to the Discovering Our Amazing God Teacher Guide there is the Student Workbook which includes reflections/journal pages to help students organize and record their new appreciation for our amazing God.  A nice journal for the older student, my older son records his thoughts in the student guide with the additional writing assignments.

One of the ways this bible curriculum is unique is that it moves the students from biblical knowledge to spiritual application.  Also, we enjoyed the in-depth discussion that the questions inspired between parent and child.

Right now Deeper Roots has a FREE gift for you, Devotional for the Homeschool Mom.  It truly is wonderful.
