Every homeschooler feels they must get their hands on all the homeschooling MUST READs, which often leads to feeling frustration, weariness and insanity because they don’t know how to process it all.
Trust me, I was one of them.
I read every book available that was related to homeschooling. Don’t get me wrong, I gained a wealth of knowledge, but I had a hard time processing it all.
My suggestion to you as a homeschooling mom is to read one book at a time, highlight the key points, make notes on Evernote, and take a few weeks to process it all. I recommend only purchasing one book at a time and not reading more than (1) homeschool related book per month.
Here are my TOP 12 Homeschool Must Reads – to read over the course of your homeschool journey
- Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell – this book is one I feel I need to read yearly. Great encouragement for starting out a new year.
- The Way They Learn by Cynthia Ulrich Tobias – really helped me determine the different learning styles my children were developing during the years.

The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore - puts a great perspective on homeschooling
- The Ultimate Book of Homeschooling Ideas : 500+ Fun and Creative Learning Activities for Kids Ages 3-12 by Linda Dobson – tons of FUN ideas when you want to do school, but want to make it FUN. It’s a great Friday book for us.
- When You Rise Up: A Covenantal Approach to Homeschooling by R. C. Sproul Jr. – I recommend this book to all families considering homeschooling.
- Educating the WholeHearted Child – Third Edition by Sally Clarkson – great tips that will put your mind to ease.
- For the Children’s Sake: Foundations of Education for Home and School by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay – I just love her heart for homeschooling and children.
- A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning byKaren Andreola – We use a lot of Charlotte Mason’s approaches. She explains it in simple terms unlike the original books.
- The Three R’s by Ruth Beechick – Many simple ideas and tips for the younger years to get started with the basics.
- Language and Thinking for Young Children by Ruth Beechick – This book has been an asset in teaching my children the necessities in life.

Homeschooling from a Biblical Worldview by Israel Wayne – If your goal is to teach your children to think from a biblical worldview, then this is a must.
Looking back over the last 10 years, I have taken a little bit from every one of these homeschooling books. And the beauty of homeschooling is that there is no cookie cutter image. I still have these books and loan them out to friends who are thinking about homeschooling. I consider it a ministry.
But please do not feel like you have to read all these book before you start homeschooling or in your first homeschool year, read as time permits.
