10 FUN Christmas Eve Traditions!

FUN Christmas eve traditions

FUN Christmas eve traditionsI love creating new Christmas Eve traditions each year.

We don’t always do all of them, but we usually do a majority of them each year together as a family.  Each year is a little bit different, but it’s always a joyous time for us.

The key is to be together and remember what Christmas is all about!  Jesus!  It doesn’t mean we don’t do anything fun and secular, but our main focus is on Christ.

Of course, we always enjoy the Christmas Eve service where we sing and worship the one who made it all happen.

10 FUN Christmas Eve Traditions

  1. We always make a spread of appetizers for dinner.  It’s junk food for us!
  2. We watch a different Christmas movie each Christmas Eve while stuffing our faces with all the goodies that mean ol’ mama doesn’t allow during the year.
  3. My mom has always provided my children and myself with new Christmas PJ’s each year to wear on Christmas Eve.  She gives me new slippers to match, too!
  4. Doing the day, we like to make a Gingerbread house.
  5. We drink egg nog or Wassail during the day.
  6. We have visited a nursing home and called Bingo for the residents.(call the activity director ahead of time)
  7. We sing Christmas carols while I try to play the piano.  Beethoven I’m not!
  8. We look at previous Christmas pictures of our family.
  9. We make a birthday cake for Jesus and the children decorate it.
  10. We set the table with birthday party plates, napkins, and balloons for the next morning.

Celebrating with an Advent Wreath

How to make an advent wreath

How to make an advent wreath

Each year we enjoy an advent wreath.  It’s nothing fancy but it helps us concentrate on the true meaning of Christmas. We usually just use four red votive candles and a large white one for the center.  We just place the candles around a small artificial wreath.

Here’s how it works:

On the first day begin with either a prayer or a Christmas carol. Light the first purple candle, known as the prophecy candle. The liturgical color purple is a sign of penance and longing as we wait for the birth of Jesus. With the lighting, talk about Jesus being the light of the world. Read the Advent Scripture of the day. Conclude by singing or praying. Have one child blow out the candle.

Light the same candle each day of the first week. Follow with the reading, Christmas carols or other meaningful activities. On the second Sunday light two purple candles, both of which are relit each night. The second candle is known as the Bethlehem candle.

The third week light the two purple candles and then a rose candle, or shepherd candle. Rose is a sign of joy and hope that He is coming.

Light the last candle, known as the angel candle, on the fourth Sunday. All four candles are lit each night that week to symbolize the growing brightness of Jesus’ coming.

The length of the Advent season depends on which day of the week Christmas falls on. You will have to adjust the appropriate readings to make sure the last days reading falls on Christmas day

Keeping Christ in Christmas – DIY Names of God Tree!

DSCN4488a

I diligently pursue to keep Christ in Christmas each year a midst the craziness that seems to take over our lives this time of year.

The story of Christmas is magnificent to me. Just to ponder a little tiny baby, yet so mighty and powerful to bring us eternal life for all  who believe in Him.

It still is astounding to me.

And I want my children to marvel in this miracle,  too.

And to think the myriad thoughts that must have been going through Mary’s mind.

Two years ago, we made a small Christmas tree with the names of God on it.

We printed the names of God on a white piece of paper and cut them out with decorative scissors.  We glued them on the tree with a hot glue gun.

Next, we gathered the several different fabric swatches and cut them out into strips about 4 in. long and tied them on  the ends of tree.

Of course, we had to add some “bling,” so we just threw some tinsel on it.

Simple and festive, yet still representing the true meaning of Christmas.  BTW,  the picture doesn’t do this tree any justice.  It’s much cuter in real life.

Coffee Filter Craft for the kiddos! – Guest Post (Allison Stanton)

allison

I am so excited to share with you my friend, Allison from Ally’s Helpful Hints for Mommies!  She is such a sweet and Godly mom who loves to share her heart for her high calling of motherhood.

You must go visit her!  She has lots of fun and creative tips for the busy mommy!

Also, please leave her a comment at the bottom of the post and welcome her!

I Want to share one of our crafts we did recently to decorate a little bit for spring! We made coffee filter flowers this Spring and decorated our play room a little bit!  It is easy and adds some color to our boring windows.

What you need:

I LOVE coffee filters even though I don’t drink coffee and they can be used for so many things and they are inexpensive.

I let my boys paint with a few different colors on the filters. They are thin so you will want to put another one under it or newspaper so you don’t get paint on your table.

While the paint is drying you can cut out some stems and leaves for the body of your flower.  I just cut straight strips and some simple leaves.

I took some packing tape which is stronger and bigger and taped the leaves on and attached it to the flower.

After that we decided where to put them in our play room and taped them on our window! This is our finished product! My four year old was pleased and declared that the blue one was his favorite, of course!

Fun activity to do for Spring and Summer.

If you wanted different shapes you could cut the coffee filter a little bit too and make tulips or any other flower you want.

What fun flowers have you made lately?
