What Can You Find at the Library

The library is one of my very favorite places!  I love the smell and different colors of the books, the quiet whispers, and the fun of browsing through the world at my fingertips. I always feel like I am on a bit of a treasure hunt.

I just found out recently that this week (April 3-9, 2022) is National Library Week. It reminds me of my homeschooling days when my children and I would go exploring at the library at least once a week. I always encouraged my children to find a good book or two each week to read, and we would discuss them as part of their reading lessons. Inspiring children to read opens a world of opportunities for them.

What to Find at Your Library

Did you know that most libraries offer much, much more than just books? I spent some time on my library’s website, and I was quite surprised at what I found! I made a library scavenger hunt that you and your kiddos can use to do a little detective work of your own at your local library. You can download it at the end of this post.

We’ll start with the easy stuff.  Most libraries will have these:

  • bookmarks
  • magazines
  • newspapers
  • audiobooks
  • DVDs
  • CDs

You may have to look a little closer to find these:

  • private study rooms
  • computer/internet
  • printer/copier/fax machine
  • a computer for games – usually in the kid section
  • tax forms – might only be out at tax time
  • community bulletin board – free advertising, so bring your business card or flyer

  • SAT/ACT practice tests
  • genealogy department – try the main library of the nearest big city
