This summer my daughter and I had the privilege of checking out the amazing The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts Program. Being a reading teacher in a public school, I feel I can give an honest review of this program. I could go on all day about The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts Program, but I’m just sharing with you what stood out to my daughter and me. I encourage you to check The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts Program to really recognize all this amazing program has to offer.

The Nitty Gritty about LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts

The LightSail for Homeschoolers language arts platform provides parents with a comprehensive and engaging online reading and writing program for children in grades pre-K through 12. A foundation in the science of reading and writing combined with the experience of a team of home educators creates a family-friendly learning experience advancing skills in the 4 Pillars of Literacy – reading, writing, vocabulary, and fluency. The LightSail literacy platform that has enhanced learning for over 5 million school students is now tailored especially to the educational goals of homeschoolers.

LightSail contains an extensive collection of tens of thousands of engaging books and multimedia content from respected publishers such as World Book and Lerner Publishing, as well as trusted homeschool and faith-based publishers. Parents customize this collection to the individual needs of their children and their family values through LightSail’s ChildSafe Content Control Service and reading- and grade-level appropriateness controls.

Writing activities complement reading assignments, and LightSail’s chat feature allows parents and children to interact and engage through the platform. Furthermore, LightSail parents have real-time access to meaningful data about their children’s reading and writing trends, comprehension, and growth that allows them to guide, create, and enhance the learning experience.

The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts Pros

Although the initial assessment was rather long for my 5th-grade daughter, I thought it was pretty accurate on her current Lexile level. It is important to assign books and articles that are within the student’s Lexile level or slightly above in order for them to comprehend the text.

The program allows you to set parental parameters on certain texts and concepts. For example, if you didn’t want your student to read anything that pertained to religion, you could put parental controls on all literature that contained that subject. They call this feature, ChildSafe Content.

There are ten of thousands of books making it a wonderful addition to any unit study. I remember when I  homeschooled my own children, we would go to the library to get as many books as we could find on a certain topic. This is so much more convenient.

One of my favorite aspects of LightSail is the TED Videos that you can assign to your students. I love to introduce my units or concepts with a video, so I found this very useful. You can assign a video on a topic to your students, and LightSail will give you suggested books on a topic.

You can assign a timed reading goal for your students for the week. This feature assures you that your student is actually reading the text. This featured would have been so helpful with my third son when I was homeschooling.

I love the fact that the whole family can read the same book. This will create wonderful and intriguing conversations at the dinner table.

I found the Memory List so informative. You can have your child copy one of the lists and they could add it to their notebook.

The program contains all of our favorite classics that we read growing up. It includes The Bobbsey Twins, Aesop Fables, Shakespeare, and Beatrice Potter, and so many more.

The price is a steal when you consider all that LightSail has to offer. You can either pay monthly or annually.

The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts  Cons

I found the dashboard was a little bit hard to navigate. However, the platforms have many videos to help you. I strongly encourage you to take the time and watch all the videos.

Like I mentioned before, the initial assessment was too long in my opinion. It took my daughter over an hour.

Overall, The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts is by far one of my favorite Language Arts programs that is digital. I believe it’s an excellent way to get your students to understand that reading and writing are very much connected. I can not wait to hear your thoughts about The LightSail Homeschoolers Language Arts program in the comment section.
